Atlanta's independent LGBT fixture, Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse, has closed its doors.
The GA Voicereports that owner Philip Rafshoon confirmed the store's closing at an event Tuesday night. As of Wednesday, the business was selling its bookshelves, tables, and chairs.
For more than 15 years, the store had been located in the city's iconic Midtown area, and according to the article had "served not only as a place for purchasing books and author readings but also as an unofficial LGBT community center."
Rafshoon announced in November that the store would not remain at its location because of high rent. There is no word on whether the store will open elsewhere.
Atlanta City Council member Alex Wan thanked both the proprietor and his establishment for service to the community by presenting a city proclamation signed by all of the council members.
